EMU (Extending Mathematical Understanding) is a program designed for Grade One students and is conducted outside the student’s classroom to address their individual needs.
Students attend daily in small groups, and homework completed each night is shared during the next session. Each week students explore counting, place value, patterns, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and measurement. Students are exposed to a range of materials and learn to talk about their mathematical understandings and explain how they arrived at an answer.
The program runs for about 20 weeks in which time students should have completed 100 sessions.
